Is Cricfy TV Safe? Our 2026 Security Review

Cricfy TV promises free live cricket and football, but Google now removes it from Android TVs and security scanners flag hosted copies. Here is what the evidence actually shows, what can go wrong, and what to do if you already installed it.

Mobile security check for Cricfy TV showing third-party source, unverified developer, no store review and Play Protect removal

Key takeaways

  • Cricfy TV is not safe to install on your main phone. It is an unofficial APK with no verified developer or store review.
  • Google Play Protect has been automatically removing Cricfy from Android TV and Google TV devices since early 2026.
  • One hosted Cricfy APK build received a “malicious activity” verdict in a sandbox analysis.
  • A VPN or antivirus scan does not make the app safe. Licensed apps are the only low-risk option.

Short answer: is Cricfy TV safe?

Highrisk

Verdict: avoid on any device that holds personal data

We rate Cricfy TV high risk. The problem is not one confirmed virus. It is that you are asked to switch off Android’s protections and trust an unverified file from an unverified website, for an app that has no accountable developer.

Cricfy TV is distributed as an APK file from websites rather than through Google Play (our Cricfy TV download guide explains why no official source exists). Apps in Google Play go through automated security checks and must follow Google’s developer policies. A sideloaded APK skips all of that. When the same app name is copied by dozens of download sites, you cannot know whether the file you received is the original, a modified build with extra ads, or something worse.

What the evidence shows

1. Google Play Protect is removing it

In early February 2026, Kenyan tech publication Techish reported a wave of complaints from football fans whose Android TV and Google TV devices were automatically uninstalling Cricfy and similar streaming apps. The cause was Google Play Protect, the security system built into Android. According to Google’s own documentation, Play Protect scans apps on a device regardless of where they were installed from, and the most harmful apps are removed automatically while less severe ones are disabled.

2. A sandbox test returned a malicious verdict

A MalwareTips URL scan summary for one of the busiest Cricfy download domains cites an ANY.RUN sandbox analysis of the Cricfy APK (version 5.6) hosted there, which returned a “malicious activity” verdict. The same summary notes that Gridinsoft’s site checker gave that domain a low trust score.

3. Users report Android warnings

Users on Reddit’s Android communities have described seeing Android warnings during installation that the app is fake and may steal their data. Personal reports are not proof on their own, but they line up with the Play Protect behaviour above.

The 6 real risks of using Cricfy TV

Device

Malware and spyware

An unverified APK can carry code that shows hidden ads, collects data or downloads other apps in the background.

Source

Fake and modified copies

Look-alike sites can repackage the app. Two files with the same name and logo can contain very different code.

Accounts

Data and login theft

Phones hold banking apps, OTP messages and email. Broad permissions put that data within reach.

Ads

Scam ads and redirects

Ad-funded streams often push fake prize pop-ups and “player update” downloads.

Settings

Weakened protection

Installing means allowing unknown sources. Keeping it often means fighting Play Protect, which leaves the whole device exposed.

Law

The app shows channels without a licence. Read Is Cricfy TV legal? for the country-by-country picture.

Permission red flags in any streaming APK

A video player needs very little access. If a streaming APK asks for more than the basics, stop and uninstall.

Already installed Cricfy TV? Do this now

If you installed Cricfy TV or any similar APK, these steps reduce the risk. They take about ten minutes.

  1. Uninstall the app. Open Settings, then Apps, find Cricfy TV and tap Uninstall. Also delete the APK file from your Downloads folder.
  2. Run a Play Protect scan. Open the Google Play Store, tap your profile icon, choose Play Protect and tap Scan. Make sure “Scan apps with Play Protect” is turned on.
  3. Revoke “install unknown apps”. In Settings, search for “Install unknown apps” and switch it off for your browser, file manager and messaging apps.
  4. Check special access. Look under Accessibility and Device admin apps. Remove anything you do not recognise.
  5. Secure your accounts. If you signed in to anything through the app or its sites, change those passwords and turn on two-step verification for Google and banking.
  6. Watch for warning signs. Unknown pop-ups, fast battery drain, new apps you did not install or OTP messages you did not request are reasons to back up your data and factory reset.

Best long-term fix: move to a licensed app for the matches you care about. Most offer free tiers, mobile data packages or low-cost tournament passes. Compare them in our Cricfy TV alternatives guide.

Why does Cricfy TV keep disappearing from Android TV?

If Cricfy vanished from your Android TV or Google TV, the app did not crash. Google Play Protect removed it. Play Protect scans installed apps in the background, and when it decides an app is potentially harmful it can uninstall it without waiting for you.

Some websites explain how to switch Play Protect off so the app stays installed. We do not recommend that. Even the publication that first reported the removals warned that disabling Play Protect removes the safety net that stops malicious apps from stealing Google account and banking credentials. A smart TV that is signed in to your main Google account is not a safe place to run an unreviewed APK.

Does a VPN make Cricfy TV safe?

No. Many download pages recommend a VPN, which gives the impression that the risk is solved. A VPN encrypts the connection between your device and the VPN server and hides your traffic from your internet provider. It does nothing about what the app itself does on your device. A VPN does not scan the APK, does not stop an app from reading your data, does not block malicious code, and does not make an unlicensed stream licensed.

Same match, very different risk: the Cricfy APK compared with licensed apps.
  • Pakistan: Tamasha, Myco and Tapmad apps, plus PTV Sports on TV.
  • India: JioHotstar and Star Sports for ICC, IPL and home series.
  • Bangladesh: Toffee, T Sports and Rabbithole.

Frequently asked questions

Is Cricfy TV a virus?

Not every copy is necessarily malware, but you cannot verify which copy you have. Cricfy TV is passed around through many look-alike sites, and at least one hosted build has received a “malicious activity” verdict in a sandbox test. That uncertainty is the problem.

Is Cricfy TV safe on Firestick or Android TV?

A TV usually holds less personal data than a phone, but it is still signed in to your Google or Amazon account. On Android TV, Google Play Protect has been removing Cricfy automatically since early 2026, which tells you how Google classifies it.

Does Cricfy TV steal personal data?

There is no public, independent audit of the app, so nobody can promise it does not. Users have reported Android warnings that the app may steal data. Any sideloaded app with broad permissions can read more than you expect.

Is Cricfy TV safe with a VPN?

No. A VPN hides your traffic from your internet provider, but it does not scan the APK, block malicious code inside the app or change who owns the broadcast rights.

Can an antivirus app make Cricfy TV safe?

A scan can catch known malware, but a clean result only means nothing known was found in that one file. New or modified builds may not be detected, and the app still runs without any store review.

What is the safest free way to watch cricket?

Use licensed free options: PTV Sports in Pakistan, free matches and highlights on official apps, the ICC and board YouTube channels, and ICC.tv where no broadcaster exists. See our legal alternatives guide.
